A dating scan is an ultrasound scan to determine how many weeks pregnant you are and your due date. Read on for more information about what a dating scan offers. A dating scan might be recommended to confirm your due date if you are unsure of your last menstrual period or your date of conception. It is usually offered to pregnant women from 10 weeks to 13 weeks gestation, but can be carried out any time from 6 weeks. If you have had bleeding during your pregnancy or you have had previous miscarriages , your doctor or midwife may recommend an early dating scan from 6 to 10 weeks gestation.
If you choose to have a dating scan, it will most probably be your first scan.

You will need to get a referral from your doctor or midwife for a dating scan. A dating scan is carried out by ultrasound. A sonographer, who is usually a radiographer or a midwife trained in ultrasound, will complete your scan. If the scan is after 10 weeks, ultrasound recordings are usually made through your abdomen. The sonographer will put gel on your abdomen and move a hand-held device called a transducer, back and forward over your skin. In some situations, such as when the scan is completed before 10 weeks of gestation or you are overweight, you may also need a vaginal scan.
Your sonographer will let you know if this is needed. For an abdominal dating ultrasound, you will need to have a full bladder. You may be asked to drink some water and not go to the toilet beforehand because a full bladder helps to push your womb up to give a better picture. For a vaginal scan, you can have an empty bladder. This will provide a fairly accurate estimate of how many weeks pregnant you are.
But it is important to remember that only a few women go into labour on their due date, so it can be more helpful to think about the month in which you are expecting your baby, rather than the exact day. I hope there is a little bub in there for you smile The same thing happened to me, when I went for my first scan we thought I was about weeks but they couldn't find anything. So they did an internal scan and found a little blob smile he was only 5 weeks along. The guy didn't seem sure in his demeanour but he said I was 5 weeks so I was like okay I guess we're having a baby. Hope everything works out for you. I wasnt sure if i should reply to this or not.
I have had this happen to me also.. I hope it all works out for you.. It happened to me almost 2 weeks a go..
I even had an internal. The scan lady left me feeling terrible as she was asking me questions like have you had any bleeding? I was like OMG why?? Is there no baby. After thinking over and over in my head and many tears later I got in touch with my midwife who reassured me everything is fine and baby could have possibly been in a difficult place or perhaps i was not as far a long as i was??
My midwife booked me in for another scan for 2 weeks later which is this Thursday and hopefully we will see the little bean. I wouldn't worry too much.go to site

The sack is very normal and if you are that worried ask your doctor or midwife to book another scan for days time. I had that happen to me! I was so dissapointed lol I was six weeks and so looking forward to my first ever ultra sound and expected to see my bubba in there waving to me lol But no, just a sack! We called her "yolky bear" for months because she was just a yolk sac lol But all went well, and i had a healthy baby girl 34 weeks later smile Dont worry, just look forward to the next ultrasound!
